Florence by car

Florence packs its Renaissance into a few hundred metres of riverbank, with galleries, workshops and bridges crowding against each other. Drivers learn quickly that the historic core belongs to residents, buses and permit holders.

Driving in Florence

Florence is reached by A1, A11 and the FI-PI-LI expressway. The centre of Florence is closed to through traffic, ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato). Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Driving through the centre is restricted, so most drivers park on the edge.

Where to park

Day visitors can leave the car at the Villa Constanza Park & Ride, just off the A-1 on the south-western edge of town, and ride tram line 1 into SMN. A dozen or so lots ring the edge of the centre, one of them just north of Piazza della Liberta. On the street, blue bays take coins only, white ones belong to residents and yellow ones are reserved.

Arriving by road

On the A-1, the Firenze-Impruneta exit serves traffic from both north and south and also leads onto the Fi-Si highway for Siena. The end of the A-11 serves districts north of the river, while the south bank is reached via the A-1 southbound to Firenze-Scandicci. Cameras police the old centre inside the broad viale tracing the former walls, open only to permit holders.

From the airport without a car

Peretola airport is linked to the city by tram line T2, which leaves from a controlled-access stop to the left of the main entrance and calls at Santa Maria Novella station before ending at Piazza San Marco. Tickets come from machines at every stop, which take cash or credit cards.
