Pisa straddles the Arno a little before it reaches the sea, a maritime republic left inland as the delta silted up. Students fill the backstreets that visitors never reach past the famous meadow.
Pisa is reached by A11, A12 and the FI-PI-LI expressway. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Driving through the centre is restricted, so most drivers park on the edge.
Streets inside the centre offer next to no parking, but Pisa Tower Parking lies close to the main sights. The Park & Ride at San Giusto/Aurelia is the midway stop of the Pisamover between the airport and Pisa Centrale. From Park Pietrasantina the Shuttle Torre bus runs to Largo Cocco Griffi by the Duomo, and the LAM Rossa links it with Central Station.
The A11 comes in from Florence and the A12 runs between Genoa and Rosignano, with the exits Pisa Nord and Pisa Centro – Airport serving the city. Many central streets are pedestrianised or form a camera-enforced ZTL reserved for residents that is easy to stray into, and the rest are narrow, one-way and congested.
The driverless Pisamover shuttles between Pisa Airport and Pisa Centrale, with tickets from its own machines beside the platform gates rather than railway ones; at Pisa Centrale it is reached by following the subway signs towards Platform 13. City buses stop on Via Sant’Agostino, a short walk north of the airport, served by LAM Verde and in the evening by line 21.
