Genoa by car
Genoa is wedged between the Ligurian hills and the docks, so its streets run in terraces and viaducts fly over the rooftops. The old caruggi behind the waterfront are barely wide enough for a scooter.
Driving in Genoa
Genoa is reached by A7, A10, A12 and A26. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.
Where to park
Free street spaces are rare in central Genoa and kerbside parking is charged anyway, so garages are the realistic option, though they too can all be full. Even scooter spaces are hard to come by, and parking close to the coastal beaches on a sunny weekend is close to impossible.
Arriving by road
On the A7 from Milan, the stretch from Serravalle to Genoa is extremely winding, so the suggested detour leaves it near Tortona for the A26/A7 towards Voltri. The A10 coast motorway from Savona is also twisty, and its collapsed Morandi bridge has been replaced by a new one. On the A12 between the Carrodano and Sestri Levante gates, snow chains must be carried from November 1 to March 31.
From the airport without a car
Volabus is the main bus link from Cristoforo Colombo airport to the city, stopping at both main train stations, and it accepts only the METDaily pass, which then also covers most city transport. Heading back, it collects passengers only at the two stations and by the Metro at Piazza De Ferrari. The Genova Airlink shuttle runs solely to the railway station near the airport.

Frequently asked questions
Italy: which side of the road do they drive on?
On the right. Speed limits are posted at the roadside and differ between towns, open roads and motorways.
Which currency will I be charged in?
Prices are usually set in EUR. The rental company sets both the price and the deposit, and shows them before you book.
Can I drive the car into another country?

Where do I park in the centre of Genoa?
Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
A non-EU licence must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit.
