Naples by car

Naples stacks itself against Vesuvius in tiers of balconies and washing lines, loud, dense and famously fond of its scooters. Its streets were narrow before anyone imagined a hatchback, and they have not widened since.

Driving in Naples

Naples is reached by A1, A3 and A16. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.

Where to park

Central Naples suffers from traffic jams and a shortage of parking, so the recommended approach is to leave the car at a lot close to the motorway exit or at your accommodation and continue by public transport.

Arriving by road

The A1 links Naples with Milan, the A3 heads south past Ercolano and Pompeii to Salerno, and the A16 runs east towards Canosa and the Adriatic. Traffic in the city is very heavy, and metro construction makes it worse around the central station and at Piazza Nicola Amore.

From the airport without a car

Alibus runs from Capodichino airport with only two stops, Stazione Centrale and Piazza Municipio by the Molo Beverello ferry port, and its ticket, sold on board, stays valid for onward city transport. The 3S bus serves the same two stops but calls at many more along the way. A metro connection to the airport is under construction.
