Turin by car

Turin lays out its grid under the Alps, arcaded avenues meeting at squares the Savoys planned for parades. Car making built the modern town, and the wooded hills across the Po are its escape.

Driving in Turin

Turin is reached by A4, A6, A21 and the Turin tangenziale. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Driving through the centre is restricted, so most drivers park on the edge.

Where to park

Parcheggio Vittorio Park is a central underground garage beneath Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Another car park fills the tunnel under Via Roma, the main street of the centre, which was dug in the fascist era to carry an underground railway line.

Arriving by road

From Geneva and northern France the route runs through the Mont Blanc Tunnel and down the A5 past Aosta and Ivrea, while traffic from Lyon and Grenoble uses the Frejus Tunnel and the A32. Genoa traffic takes the A7 to Tortona, then the A21 past Alessandria and Asti; all are toll motorways. Inside the city, many streets have restricted entry and trams share the road.

From the airport without a car

Turin Airport has its own station, Caselle Aeroporto, under the terminal building; trains of the Torino-Ceres line (SFMA) run straight to Torino Porta Susa and Torino Lingotto. Bus 268 leaves the airport for Caselle town and the Porta Susa and Porta Nuova railway stations, and some journeys continue to Lingotto.

Frequently asked questions

Italy: which side of the road do they drive on?

On the right. Speed limits are posted at the roadside and differ between towns, open roads and motorways.

Which currency will I be charged in?

Prices are usually set in EUR. The rental company sets both the price and the deposit, and shows them before you book.

Can I drive the car into another country?

Often yes within the EU, but never assume it. Crossing a border has to be allowed by the rental company and usually costs extra, so check the terms before you book.

Where do I park in the centre of Turin?

Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

A non-EU licence must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit.

What are the speed limits in Italy?

Are the motorways tolled?

Motorways charge at the barrier. Payment is by cash, card or an electronic tag.
