Venice ends where the pavement ends: past the causeway there are no wheels at all, only water, bridges and steps. Visitors park at the edge of the lagoon and continue on foot or by boat.
Driving in Venice
Venice is reached by A4, A27 and SS309 Romea. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Driving through the centre is restricted, so most drivers park on the edge.
Where to park
Cars stop at the lagoon edge, at Piazzale Roma with the multi-storey Autorimessa Comunale or on Tronchetto island, which the People Mover shuttle train links to Piazzale Roma. Mainland alternatives are car parks near Venezia Mestre station, with frequent trains on to Santa Lucia, and free parking by the Mogliano Veneto and Oriago railway stations.
Arriving by road
Road traffic reaches the island city over the Ponte della Libertà causeway, which ends at Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto on the western edge; past them no streets for cars exist, and tailbacks on the approach can be long. Drivers bound for the Lido keep to the right-hand lane off the bridge to reach the car ferry from Tronchetto, line 17.
From the airport without a car
From Marco Polo Airport, city bus 5 and express bus 35 both run to Piazzale Roma, and water buses to Murano, Rialto and San Marco leave from a jetty reached by a covered walkway. At Treviso Airport, local bus 6 connects with Treviso train station for regional trains to Venezia Santa Lucia, while coaches stop in Mestre on the way to Piazzale Roma.
