Where to pick up a car in Trieste

Rental desks by area, with the distance from the city centre.

Trieste by car

Trieste looks more Habsburg than Italian, a grand seafront of coffee houses under a karst plateau. When the bora blows down off that plateau, ropes go up in the streets for pedestrians to hold.

Driving in Trieste

Trieste is reached by A4, RA13 and SS14. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.

Arriving by road

Coming along the A4 from Venice, drivers pass the Monfalcone-Lisert toll gate and leave at the Sistiana exit for the coastal SS 14 Costiera, or follow the SS 202 Triestina over the Carso Plateau via Opicina and Padriciano. From Slovenia, the SS 58 crosses at Fernetti and joins the SS 202 at Opicina, and the SS 15 Via Flavia comes from Koper through the Rabuiese border.

From the airport without a car

Trieste Airport has its own railway station facing the terminal, joined to it by a skybridge, on the line between Trieste and Venice. Bus number 51 also connects the airport with the bus station in Trieste, which stands beside the railway station.

Frequently asked questions

Italy: which side of the road do they drive on?

On the right. Speed limits are posted at the roadside and differ between towns, open roads and motorways.

Which currency will I be charged in?

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

A non-EU licence must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit.

What are the speed limits in Italy?

Are the motorways tolled?

Motorways charge at the barrier. Payment is by cash, card or an electronic tag.
