Catania by car

Catania was rebuilt in black lava stone after Etna buried it, so its baroque squares look nothing like anywhere else in Sicily. The volcano keeps setting the weather, the soil and the mood of the place.

Driving in Catania

Catania is reached by A18 and A19. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.

Where to park

Ten main car parks surround the city, and both the airport and Nesima, the metro station west of the city, offer park and ride. From Nesima the metro runs into the centre via Borgo and the Giovanni XXIII transport hub, ending at Stesicoro.

Arriving by road

The A18 arrives from Messina and the A19 from Palermo, and an extension of the A18 continues from Catania towards Syracuse and Gela. In the centre, congestion, one-way streets and pedestrian areas make driving hard, and a small ZTL (limited traffic zone) bars most vehicles at all times.

From the airport without a car

At Catania-Fontanarossa Airport the Alibus stop is straight ahead from Arrivals; the bus runs via the sea-port to the railway station and loops through the city centre. Regional trains to Catania Centrale leave from the separate Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa station, reached on foot or by a shuttle bus from the terminal.
