Munich carries its Bavarian formality lightly, with beer gardens under chestnut trees and a royal district that sets the tone for everything around it. The Alps and the lakes below them are close enough that locals treat them as a weekend habit.
Munich is reached by A 8, A 9, A 92, A 94, A 95 and A 99. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Driving through the centre is restricted, so most drivers park on the edge.
Street spaces inside the inner ring road are kept for residents, so visitors rely on public garages, marked by blue signs with a white P that turn green when spaces are free and red when full. Around the ring roads and along the avenue to the university quarter, 20 Park & Ride lots connect with S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines.
The motorways feed into the A99, the outer and still unfinished of three rings around the city; inside it runs the Mittlerer Ring, and the Altstadtring follows the old city walls. Munich has an environmental zone, and cars entering the city or the wider area around it need a green sticker.
S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 link Munich Airport with Hauptbahnhof and the Altstadt, and the S8 is the quicker of the two to Ostbahnhof and the only one running all night. For Pasing, the S1 with a change at Laim is the faster choice.
