Stuttgart by car

Stuttgart occupies a bowl of vineyard-covered slopes, so its streets climb and dive and the buildings follow the contours. Car making has shaped the place since its beginnings and still supplies both its museums and much of its work.

Driving in Stuttgart

Stuttgart is reached by A 8, A 81 and A 831. Stuttgart has a low-emission zone, Umweltzone: check the sticker rules before driving into the centre. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.

Where to park

The handiest park and ride sites are at Degerloch Albstraße and Österfeld, and cars without a green sticker may still use them. In the centre, kerbside parking inside the City-Ring is tightly regulated, and some car parks shut overnight so a car left inside cannot be collected until they reopen.

Arriving by road

Signs for Stuttgart Zentrum lead into the centre, while expressways such as the B10, B14 and B27 link the city with its suburbs. There is no motorway on the north-east side, so traffic from that direction has to cross the city centre. Hilly ground means many road tunnels, including several under junctions in the middle of town.

From the airport without a car

S-Bahn lines S2 and S3 leave from the Flughafen station beneath Stuttgart Airport and run through the centre to Hauptbahnhof. Stadtbahn line U6 stops outside the terminal building beside the Mövenpick hotel and also reaches Hauptbahnhof. The airport lies in fare zone 2, outside the city’s zone 1.
