Düsseldorf keeps its offices, fashion houses and river promenade on the right bank of the Rhine, and the result feels deliberately tidy next to the industrial neighbours upstream. Trade fairs set the rhythm of the year and fill the hotels in waves.

Driving in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf is reached by A 3, A 44, A 46, A 52 and A 57. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.

Where to park

Central Düsseldorf has plenty of multi-storey car parks and underground garages, though they are on the pricey side, and parking at the kerb is restricted.

Arriving by road

Within the city the B1 and B8 run north–south and the B7 east–west, mainly feeding traffic to and from the surrounding motorways. From February 2026 the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke, which takes the B 7 over the Rhine, is closed to vehicles heavier than 3.5 t. The centre is an environmental zone, so cars need a sticker showing their pollution category.

From the airport without a car

Düsseldorf Airport has its own S-Bahn stop beneath the terminal, served by the S11 to the Hauptbahnhof. The SkyTrain people mover links the terminal with the larger Düsseldorf Flughafen station for regional and long-distance trains. Since September 2026 the Stadtbahn also reaches the airport: the U80 comes from the central station and the U81 from Arena Messe Nord.
