Dortmund by car

Dortmund anchors the eastern end of the Ruhr, a dense run of former pit villages that have flowed into one another with little open ground between. Drivers notice it at once: one junction follows another, and the next suburb is always minutes away.

Driving in Dortmund

Dortmund is reached by A 1, A 2, A 45 and B 1. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.

Where to park

Park and ride lots sit outside the city, the biggest of them by the Westfalenhallen and Hafen Stadtbahn stops, from where light rail trains reach the centre quickly. In the centre itself, parking mostly means busy underground garages.

Arriving by road

The A1 along the northern and the A2 along the eastern city limits meet at the Kamener Kreuz, and with the A45 on the west they make up the Dortmunder Autobahnring. The Ruhrschnellweg becomes the B 1 at Kreuz Dortmund West and jams so often that locals call it Ruhrschleichweg. The centre is an environment zone where cars need a pollution sticker.

From the airport without a car

Dortmund Airport has no rail or tram link of its own: a non-stop express bus runs to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof, and another shuttles to Holzwickede station on the railway. Municipal bus 490 links the airport with Aplerbeck, where Stadtbahn line U47 continues to the Hauptbahnhof by way of Stadtgarten and Kampstraße.
