Bremen grew up as a Hanseatic port a long way upstream from open water, and the Weser still decides how its districts line up. Flat marshland and dyke lanes run out towards the estuary, with smaller harbour places strung between them.

Arriving by road
Autobahn 1 is the route for arrivals from Hamburg to the north or Cologne to the south. The A27 links Bremen northwards with Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven and heads south towards Hanover, carrying traffic on to Braunschweig and Berlin.
From the airport without a car
Bremen Airport is linked to the city by tram line 6 of BSAG, which stops directly outside the main terminal building. It runs into downtown at Domsheide and continues to the Hauptbahnhof, the main railway station.
