Coal built Katowice and then let it go: mines and steelworks gave way to offices, concert halls and a conurbation of neighbouring towns running together without obvious seams. Driving across that sprawl means constant junctions and very little open ground.

Arriving by road
The centre is encircled by a ring made up of the A4, the Murckowska freeway, Bocheńskiego road and the Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa, which runs partly underground and dives into a tunnel beneath the Rondo roundabout. Arriving along the A4, the Mikołowska interchange is the principal turn-off for downtown. Most of the city centre has been a Tempo 30 zone since 2015.
From the airport without a car
From Katowice Airport the AP express bus runs straight to the city’s main train and bus stations. Line M11 ends at the same spot but calls at a long string of stops along the way.
