Gdańsk by car

Brick gables and crane silhouettes mark Gdańsk out as a Hanseatic port, grown rich on amber and grain at the mouth of the Motława. It merges seamlessly into Sopot and Gdynia, so the built-up strip runs well past its own limits.

Driving in Gdańsk

Gdańsk is reached by A1 and Obwodnica Trójmiejska (S6). Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.

Where to park

Paid parking covers the touristy centre of the Main City and much of the rest of it, as well as large parts of Oliwa and Wrzeszcz. Many shopping centres charge too, Forum Mall near the centre included, and spaces in the areas popular with tourists are scarce.

Arriving by road

Wide roads ring the Main City and confuse newcomers, since left turns are often made from the right-hand lane, and they carry heavy traffic because residents of southern Gdańsk have no other way through. Queues for the Forum Mall car park regularly clog several central junctions, including the large one near Śródmieście SKM Station.

From the airport without a car

From the Port Lotniczy stop at the airport, bus 210 heads into Gdańsk via Gdańsk Główny, and night line N3 also serves Główny and Wrzeszcz. POLREGIO trains leave from Gdańsk Port Lotniczy, reached by a covered bridge at the western end of Terminal T2, and mostly require a change at Gdańsk Wrzeszcz for Główny. A direct shuttle bus stops outside the Mercure Hevelius hotel near the main station.
