Nuremberg wraps a sandstone castle, a stretch of old wall and the Pegnitz into a compact walled heart that empties of traffic on its foot-only streets. Franconian wine villages, breweries and the Altmühl valley spread out past it.
Nuremberg is reached by A 3, A 9, A 6 and A 73. The centre of Nuremberg is closed to through traffic. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Driving through the centre is restricted, so most drivers park on the edge.
Park & Ride sites are signposted from the main approach roads, and 19 parking garages with 5500 spaces cover longer stays, with roadside indicator signs showing where places are free. Most kerbside spaces, even in outer districts, are reserved for residents.
The A73 starts on the south-east edge and cuts north-west through the city towards Fürth and Bamberg, while the A3, A9 and A6 skirt the north-east, east and south. Inside the walls the old town roads form loops (Schleifenlösung) that lead drivers back out, so crossing it means leaving and re-entering by another gate.
Nuremberg Airport is the terminus of U-Bahn line U2, which runs underground to the main railway station. Heading out to the airport, many U2 trains end earlier at Ziegelstein, so only those signed Flughafen/Airport go all the way. Bus 30 from Erlangen and bus 33 from Fürth also call at the airport.
