Dresden by car
Dresden fills a wide bend of the Elbe, with baroque palaces on one side and hillside villas and vineyards climbing the other. Sandstone gorges of Saxon Switzerland begin a short run upstream, and the Ore Mountains close the horizon behind.
Driving in Dresden
Dresden is reached by A 4, A 13 and A 17. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.
Where to park
Downtown Dresden has plenty of car parks, and electronic signs around the city show how many spaces nearby lots have free; finding one gets harder on Saturdays. Park & Ride sites outside town connect with public transport. In the Neustadt district spaces are scarce, and many streets there are reserved for residents or run one way.
Arriving by road
The A4 cuts across the north-west of Dresden from west to east; the A17 branches off it heading south-east over the Ore Mountains to Prague, and the A13 to Berlin starts at the Dresden-Nord interchange. Traffic thickens while the Striezelmarkt is on, and police close roads by the stadium on Dynamo Dresden match days.
From the airport without a car
Dresden Airport has an underground S-Bahn station, Dresden Flughafen, with trains to Dresden Neustadt and on to the Hauptbahnhof. Alternatively, buses 77 and 97 run to the Infineon Nord stop, where a tram connection into town is announced in English and German.

Frequently asked questions
Germany: which side of the road do they drive on?
On the right. Speed limits are posted at the roadside and differ between towns, open roads and motorways.
Which currency will I be charged in?
Prices are usually set in EUR. The rental company sets both the price and the deposit, and shows them before you book.
Can I drive the car into another country?
Often yes within the EU, but never assume it. Crossing a border has to be allowed by the rental company and usually costs extra, so check the terms before you book.
Where do I park in the centre of Dresden?
Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
An EU or EEA licence is enough.
What are the speed limits in Germany?
50 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on open roads, 130 km/h on motorways.
Are the motorways tolled?
Motorways are free.
