Strasbourg looks across the Rhine at Germany, and its oldest quarter occupies an island that river channels ring completely. Trams and bicycles were given priority there, which pushed through-traffic out onto the bypasses.
Strasbourg is reached by A35, A4 and A355. The centre of Strasbourg is closed to through traffic. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Driving through the centre is restricted, so most drivers park on the edge.
Park-and-ride lots with a combined parking and tram ticket stand at Ducs d’Alsace, Baggersee, Elsau, Hoenheim Gare and Espace Européen de l’Entreprise, the last one linked to downtown by bus rather than tram. Elsau suits motorhomes. Several large garages ring the old city, among them Petite France Ste Marguerite.
Traffic from Germany arrives by the A5, while the A4 serves Paris and Benelux and the A35 serves Switzerland and Lyon. The west bypass links the A4 and A35 in the north to the A35 and A352 in the south, keeping through traffic away from the city. Driving into the old city is fairly easy, though a few streets are closed to cars.
A train runs from the airport, at Entzheim southwest of the city, to the Gare de Strasbourg, the main station in the centre. The ticket includes a tram connection onward and can be bought at the arrivals hall machines or directly on the train platform.
