Nice by car
Nice fills a curving bay with the Ligurian Alps rising directly behind it, so the hinterland turns steep within minutes of leaving the seafront. Monaco and the Italian border are both an easy hop eastwards.
Driving in Nice
Nice is reached by A8, M6007 and M6098. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.
Where to park
Street parking anywhere central is metered in daytime and spaces are scarce. The dependable choice is an underground car park, where a fixed-length ticket (abonnement) can be bought. Thieves target car boots in the underground parking beneath the old town.
Arriving by road
Drivers arriving from the west leave the A8 at exit 50 and head for the Promenade des Anglais, which leads into town along the coast. From the east, exit 55 is signed for the centre, and the Basse, Moyenne and Grande Corniche roads offer a scenic alternative. The A8 has a sharp bend near the airport where accidents are frequent.
From the airport without a car
Tram line 2 serves both terminals of Nice Côte d’Azur Airport and runs on into the city, reaching the centre at Jean Médecin station. The tram also stops at the Grand Arénas interchange, next to the Nice St Augustin regional station for TER trains, and bus 12 follows the Promenade des Anglais to the old town.
