Lisbon by car

Hills crowd Lisbon against its estuary, where a grid-planned lower district gives way to the tangled Moorish lanes that came through the earthquake. Tiled façades, funiculars and long spans over the Tagus are the everyday scenery.

Driving in Lisbon

Lisbon is reached by A1, A5, IC19 and 2ª Circular. Lisbon has a low-emission zone: check that the car meets its emission rules before driving in. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.

Arriving by road

From the south the A2 leads to the 25 de Abril Bridge, the best choice for the centre and the west, though weekday mornings are congested. Branching onto the A12 gives the Vasco da Gama Bridge, which is quieter but carries a higher toll and suits the airport and Parque das Nações. The CRIL (IC17) and CREL (A9) are additional ring roads.

From the airport without a car

The airport metro station is the terminus of the red line, so reaching the centre needs a change to the green or blue line. Terminal 1 is where the metro, the buses and the main taxi rank are located. Bus 44 reaches Oriente railway station for a change to the metro.
