Driving in Funchal
Funchal is reached by VR1 (via rápida) and ER101. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.
Where to park
A large parking garage stands just past an overpass on the ER103, on the right as you drive downhill from exit 11, within walking distance of Mercado Dos Lavradores and the Sé Cathedral.
Arriving by road
The ER101 follows the coast, and the way into the centre is to leave at exit 11 and descend onto the ER103. A highway also links the city with Ribeira Brava and Câmara de Lobos westward, and with Santa Cruz, Machico and Caniçal eastward.
