Vienna by car

Vienna wears its imperial past in ring boulevards, palaces and coffee houses, yet nearly half the ground inside its limits is parkland, vineyard or water. The Danube, split into separate channels, does more to organise the layout than any street.

Driving in Vienna

Vienna is reached by A 1, A 2, A 4, A 22 and A 23. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.

Where to park

Almost the entire city is now a Kurzparkzone, a short-term parking zone, with exceptions only in rural spots such as the Kahlenberg parking lot. Park and Ride lots sit at several subway and S-Bahn stations on the outskirts, and their weekly rates are discounted when bundled with a Zone 100 public transport ticket.

Arriving by road

The A23 Südosttangente is the stretch to steer clear of at rush hour, when jams there are close to certain and spread across the city streets too. Austrian motorways need a toll sticker, sold at petrol stations and rest stops in versions for 10 days, 2 months or 1 year.

From the airport without a car

From the airport, the slower S7 S-Bahn and the faster City Airport Train both run to Wien Mitte/Landstraße, while long-distance trains head to Wien Hauptbahnhof. Riders of the S7 holding a Vienna Zone 100 ticket need only an extra fare for the stretch to Schwechat. Vienna Airport Bus coaches also serve the city.
