Graz by car
Graz hides a red-roofed old town beneath a wooded hill crowned by a clock tower, and Italian and Slovenian influences show up in its cooking. Styrian wine routes and pumpkin fields begin a short run out towards the border.
Driving in Graz
Graz is reached by A 2, A 9 and B 67. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.
Where to park
Street spaces in central Graz are scarce and charged on weekdays and Saturday mornings through machines found in each street, with blue zones limiting the stay and cheaper green zones allowing longer ones. Underground garages serve the centre, among them the Pfauengarten Parkgarage beneath Karmeliterplatz.
Arriving by road
The A9 crosses Graz from north to south, mostly inside the Plabutsch tunnel, while the A2 runs east–west just below the city. North of Graz the A9 uses the single-carriageway Gleinalm tunnel, which carries a toll. Towards Vienna the S6 via Bruck an der Mur is a scenic alternative with many tunnels.
From the airport without a car
At Graz Airport the bus stop sits right outside arrivals, served by lines 630 and 631 to Jakominiplatz, the city’s main public transport hub. A short walk east from the terminal leads to the railway station, where S-Bahn line S5 runs to Graz Hauptbahnhof.

Frequently asked questions
Austria: which side of the road do they drive on?
On the right. Speed limits are posted at the roadside and differ between towns, open roads and motorways.
Which currency will I be charged in?
Prices are usually set in EUR. The rental company sets both the price and the deposit, and shows them before you book.
Can I drive the car into another country?
Often yes within the EU, but never assume it. Crossing a border has to be allowed by the rental company and usually costs extra, so check the terms before you book.
Where do I park in the centre of Graz?
Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.
What are the speed limits in Austria?
50 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on open roads, 130 km/h on motorways.
Are the motorways tolled?
Motorways need a prepaid pass, and a few tunnel and mountain-pass sections are charged separately at a toll station — the pass is not needed on those. Payment is by cash or card.
Where can I pick up a rental car in Graz?
In the city centre: Hertz. In Gries: Europcar and Sixt. In Lend: an independent office. In Straßgang: an independent office. Elsewhere in the city: Buchbinder and an independent office. More rental desks are at Graz Airport.
