Linz by car
Linz turned a steel reputation around with a media-art museum and a riverside festival, though the works still dominate the Danube bank downstream. The granite uplands of the Mühlviertel begin immediately across the river.
Driving in Linz
Linz is reached by A 1, A 7, A 25 and S 10. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.
Arriving by road
The A 1 skirts the south of the city, whereas the Mühlkreis Autobahn (A 7) crosses Linz itself, and bypass lanes built at the VÖEST Bridge still carry inner-city traffic. The Donautal Bridge is the first finished stage of the A 26 Westring, intended to take pressure off the Römerberg Tunnel. On Rohrbacher Straße coming from Puchenau, cars with three or more occupants may use the bus lane.
From the airport without a car
Bus line 601 runs from Linz Airport in Hörsching to the centre of Linz. The other route is by train to Hörsching railway station, from which a free shuttle bus serves the airport.

Frequently asked questions
Austria: which side of the road do they drive on?
On the right. Speed limits are posted at the roadside and differ between towns, open roads and motorways.
Which currency will I be charged in?
Prices are usually set in EUR. The rental company sets both the price and the deposit, and shows them before you book.
Can I drive the car into another country?
Often yes within the EU, but never assume it. Crossing a border has to be allowed by the rental company and usually costs extra, so check the terms before you book.
Where do I park in the centre of Linz?
Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.
What are the speed limits in Austria?
50 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on open roads, 130 km/h on motorways.
Are the motorways tolled?
Motorways need a prepaid pass, and a few tunnel and mountain-pass sections are charged separately at a toll station — the pass is not needed on those. Payment is by cash or card.
Where can I pick up a rental car in Linz?
At Linz Franckstraße: Sixt. In Froschberg: an independent office. In Neue Welt: Buchbinder. More rental desks are at Linz Airport.
