What are the Uber Black vehicle requirements?
Uber lists four conditions for the car itself:

What is the Uber Black car list?
Searches for the Uber Black car list, the Uber Black vehicle list or Uber Black eligible cars all point to the same place: Uber’s eligible vehicles page. This guide does not copy it, because the list is organized by city and changes.
Uber’s own notes on that page decide how to read it.[2] The information is for convenience purposes only, and the year shown beside a vehicle is the minimum model year for eligibility. The page also states that if a vehicle appears there but does not comply with the requirements for the ride option in your area, it is not eligible. For Black, that means the listing, the 5-year rule, the exterior and the interior all have to line up.

How does the 5-year model year rule work?
Uber says the model year must be no older than 5 years ago. Two points follow from that wording.
First, the limit moves with the calendar. A car that meets it today will age out of Black eligibility in a later year, even if it never changes. If you plan to drive for several years, the useful question is how long the car stays inside the limit, not whether it qualifies this week.
Second, Uber’s driver page does not say how it counts a partial year, and the list shows a minimum year per model. When your car sits close to the edge, confirm the minimum year on the city list rather than counting backward yourself.
The age rule is separate from the list’s minimum year. The list tells you the earliest year Uber accepts for a model. The 5-year rule tells you the age limit for Black. Your car has to satisfy both.
Why do color and interior matter so much?
Both are written as conditions of the vehicle, not preferences. Uber requires a black exterior and a black leather or vegan leather interior. Uber’s page does not define shades, so a dark gray or deep blue paint is a question to settle with Uber before you buy, not an assumption. Likewise, cloth seats or a light-colored cabin do not match the stated interior rule.
This is why model eligibility alone is not enough when you shop. The same model can be sold in many colors with several upholstery options, and only the combination that matches Uber’s wording counts. When you view a car, check the paint, the seats and the door panels yourself.
Does Uber Black need a vehicle inspection?
Possibly, depending on the city. Uber says inspection requirements vary by city and that in some markets all drivers must pass a vehicle inspection before the first trip; its page also describes an annual inspection.[3] Treat it as a separate step from the make, model, color and interior rules above. Uber also says it does not cover inspection costs when a third-party mechanic performs the inspection, or the repairs and maintenance needed to pass.

How should you check a car before buying or renting?

- Confirm the make, model and year appear on Uber’s eligible vehicles list for your city.
- Confirm the model year is no older than 5 years ago, and that it will stay inside the limit for as long as you plan to drive.
- Confirm the exterior is black.
- Confirm the interior is black leather or vegan leather.
- Confirm the car meets the local inspection and permit rules.
