Uber/Lyft Car and Driver Requirements

Do you want to make some extra money for the holidays? Or maybe for a full-time income? Then consider becoming a Lyft or Uber driver.

The two big ridesharing companies in the USA both offer you the opportunity to do so by giving rides to people in your part of the country whenever you have some time to spare.

So, what are the car requirements for Uber and Lyft? Do you qualify to be a driver? To see if you are likely to qualify to join either of these ridesharing companies, check out the requirements below.

Note: If your car doesn’t meet these requirements, you can always rent one from us!

Uber/Lyft Car and Driver Requirements
Uber Car Requirements

What kind of car do you need for Uber? How old can your car be to drive for Uber? To join Uber’s budget ridesharing scheme (UberX), you need a car that meets their requirements in full. There is no comprehensive Uber cars list, but if your vehicle meets the UberX driver car requirements listed below, you are probably good to go:

  • Vehicle Age – What year car do you need for Uber? Year 2000 or newer. Uber year requirements vary from city to city. Year 2000 Uber car models are the oldest currently allowed, but the threshold could be 2001, 2005, 2007, or even 2011, depending on where exactly you live.
  • In-State Plates – No out-of-state plates are allowed. You need to own a car that complies with state vehicle regulations. Any car that has in-state plates will obviously be suitable in this respect.
  • Current Registration – To make absolutely sure that the plates on your car are legitimate, UberX car requirements state that your vehicle needs to be currently registered.
  • Configuration – All UberX car models must be a four-door sedan and be able to seat four or more passengers comfortably.

All vehicles must pass the Uber driver car requirements test before they can be used.

Find out what car qualifies for Uber.

Uber/Lyft Car and Driver Requirements
Different Car Types for Uber’s 4 Tiers of Service

What are the different types of Uber? Uber has four basic levels of service: Economy, Premium, Accessibility, and Carpool. For Uber’s Economy services (which include UberX and UberXL), you’ll need a clean, recent-model, four-door car that meets the requirements above.

UberXL is a service that offers more room for additional luggage and people. If you have a van or SUV that is one of the approved UberXL car models, you could make more money. UberXL year requirements are the same as for the UberX service.

If you want to drive for Uber’s premium services, such as UberSELECT, UberBLACK, or UberLUX, you will need an approved luxury car. UberBLACK has an additional requirement that the car is painted black.

(If you have an extra car that meets these requirements and you’re not utilizing it much, you can make money renting it out to other Uber drivers. I highly recommend listing it on our site.)

Uber/Lyft Car and Driver Requirements
Uber Driver Requirements

In order to qualify as a driver, you need to meet the Uber driving requirements. These are not particularly onerous, but they are designed to exclude inexperienced or dangerous drivers from the pool. The basic UberX driver requirements are as follows:

  • Age – 21 or over
  • Experience – Three years or more
  • Driving Record – Clean

If you meet the above requirements, you will then need to pass a background check before you are approved.

Uber/Lyft Car and Driver Requirements
Lyft Car Requirements

The Lyft driver car requirements are more specific than those for Uber but generally speaking, if you own a four-door sedan in good condition, your vehicle is probably one of the approved Lyft car types. The following requirements are accurate as at the time of writing but may change in the future:

  • Vehicle Age – 2003 or newer. As with UberX year requirements, there are some exceptions: In Seattle, Portland, Washington D.C., or Minneapolis-St. Paul, local government regulations mean that Lyft year requirements in these areas are stricter – no vehicles over 10 years old. In Pittsburgh, the limit is 8 years.
  • Licensing – Current registration, with in-state plates.
  • Tires – The tires on your vehicle need to have sufficient tread. Lyft requires you to perform the penny test on each one and send photographic evidence before they will approve your car.
  • Windows – You need to have functional windows on all doors and a windshield with no big cracks anywhere, and absolutely no cracks at all that may obscure the driver’s vision.
  • Windshield Wipers – Front and rear wipers need to be in good working order.
  • Seat Belts – All approved Lyft car models have at least four passenger seat belts (in addition to the driver’s seat belt), and all of them must be functioning properly in order for your car to pass muster.
  • Front Seat Adjustment – The front seats in your vehicle need to move forwards and backward as designed.
  • Car Doors – Your vehicle must have four doors, all of which should open and close without issue – from both the outside and the inside. Your passengers must be able to lock and unlock their doors without assistance.
  • Climate Control – Your vehicle’s heating and air-conditioning systems need to be functioning properly.

Makes and models Lyft has previously approved include the Toyota Tacoma, GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Sonic, and Ford Expedition. Any car with less than four doors or that is not roadworthy will be disqualified.

There is no official list of Lyft-approved models, just as there is no UberX cars list, so you will have to judge for yourself – using the criteria above – whether your vehicle is likely to be approved.

Uber/Lyft Car and Driver Requirements
Different Car Types for Lyft’s 5 Tiers of Service

Like Uber, Lyft offers levels of service to provide economy options for the budget-minded and luxury options for people wanting a nicer ride. Lyft’s five tiers of service are Line (carpool), Lyft (standard service), Plus (more room via SUVs and vans), Lux (luxury) and Lux SUV (luxury SUV).

As with Uber, if you have a luxury car such as a BMW or Lexus that meets the requirements, you can potentially drive for Lyft’s premium services and earn more money.

Uber/Lyft Car and Driver Requirements
Lyft Driver Requirements

If you are fairly certain that your car will be approved, it’s time to take a look at your own credentials. The following is a summary of the Lyft driver requirements:

  • Age – 21 or over.
  • Experience – Must have held a current driving license for at least one year.
  • Driving Record – You must have a clean record.
  • Insurance – You need a valid insurance policy.
  • Phone – You need to own a recent model smart phone.

Earn Money by Driving for Uber or Lyft

If you qualify for either or both of these ridesharing schemes, you could make a substantial amount of money driving your car on a part- or full-time basis. If you have your own car, you can get started immediately making money with Uber and Lyft. If you don’t have a suitable car, you can easily rent a car through our website and start earning cash quickly!

I have just relocated to Sacramento California and still have a valid Alabama registration and license. I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze that meets all requirements. I have not been table to get a job and need to start earning money asap. Are there any exceptions to the in state criteria for my license. I intend to go back to Alabama within the next 6 months, but may be willing to change my license and tags if I get dome degree of confirmation that I will be approved as an Uber driver. Please e-mail about my specific situation.
    Thank you

It is actually stated in the article above under IN – STATE PLATES than No Out of State plates allowed. It states that you must comply with yhe state that you are driving in while being an uber driver. So if you are driving in Califirnia as an uber driver then you havr to comply with having California tags on yout vehicle to be able to work. Since your plates are from Alabama that is the only state you can work in driving for uber. Once you change your tags to California then you can drive for uber as long as you meet all the other requirements.

i drive for lyft with a 2014 Nissan Altima, and i am doing it part time, However i am in the process of purchasing a vehicle to drive for Uber Plus ( Audi A4 2007) the car has 120,000 miles on it and it is in excellent condition in and out. I know it will pass the inspection for a safe car, however would it pass by having more than 100,000 miles on it, or any other car that’s exceeded this number for that matter ?
    Thanks

Hi I know that you have kinda answered this before but, I was wondering as I’m looking a getting a car that will qualify for lyft/uber and there are a lot of newer clean cars out there but some have over 100k on them. I’m worried about going out and getting one of these cars just to find out that it will not qualify. All of the cars that I’m looking at are fully working, clean, dent free and have clear titles.

    • James R July 18, 2016 at 3:54 am - Reply

Hi Keenan, the car should have no problem as long as it meets the Uber / Lyft vehicle requirements and can pass a 19 point inspection. High mileage on a car will not disqualify that car.

How exactly does this work? Are there any hidden fees? Insurance included? Are the cars already approved with Uber and Lyft? How is the process of getting the car on my driver profile? I already drive for Lyft and would like to drive for Uber as well. Is there a deposit required and what about maintenance? Do they come already detailed and cleaned? Who owns these cars? Thanks!

    • Reese Moulton December 20, 2017 at 7:39 pm - Reply

Hi Jayna, the process is very simple. You will select a vehicle in your location that you like and book it. We will run a quick background check and then the owner will be able to approve your application if the vehicle is available. Once approved, you will receive the required documents (Insurance with your name on it, registration, and the Uber/Lyft inspection forms) on your HyreCar driver dashboard. You will then be able to upload them into your Uber/Lyft account and arrange a pick up time/location with the owner. There are no hidden fees, as the payment is very transparent and made up front. Insurance is $10/day. A deposit of $200 (fully refundable) is only required if you are paying with a debit card. If you have a credit card to use for the payment, we will not charge the additional $200, but we will simply keep the card on file.

All of the vehicles are privately owned by individuals in your area. The owners are responsible for the maintenance of the vehicle and should have them cleaned as well.

We will have a representative reach out to you today to answer any additional questions you might have.

    • Reese Moulton December 20, 2017 at 7:31 pm - Reply

If you choose to drive a luxury vehicle, you should be eligible to drive for Uber Select and Lyft Premier (assuming the vehicle qualifies), which charges the passengers more each ride. This often results in an increase to drivers income. You will want to make sure you check out the different options that are available to you in your specific location.

The vehicle itself can get claims made against it while being rented. How are driver errors like parking tickets and automatic toll system charges handled by these rentals. Mailed citations for such arrive days to weeks after the rental day. I do not yet see any reasonable way to guard the owner from such charges. Can you please advise how such issues are resolved and by who the owner or HyreCar?

    • Reese Moulton February 12, 2018 at 6:44 pm - Reply

Tickets, tolls, and fees that occur during the rental are sent to the owners address since the vehicle is registered in their name. They will then be able to transfer liability over to the driver for them to pay.

  70. DrvrDonMiller February 11, 2018 at 10:37 pm - Reply

Commercial or private insurance does do cover rental vehicle service outages for body damages the renter caused or experienced. The $200 deposit does not cover much service outage potential revenues. Can you please advise how such issues are resolved and by who the owner or HyreCar?

We provide our own fully comprehensive rideshare insurance for the duration of the rental, so both the owner and driver are covered!

Having passengers puck or vomit in a rented vehicle, a $200 is not high enough to cover a commercial detailing plus the rental day outage and owner time required to get the issue resolved. Can you please advise how such issues are resolved and by who the owner or HyreCar?

    • Reese Moulton February 12, 2018 at 6:51 pm - Reply

The $200 deposit is required to cover any incidental damages like this. Also, when passengers puke or vomit in a vehicle, Uber compensates the driver with up to $150.

I live and operate an approved Uber XL and Lyft Plus vehicle in a major city zone where neither Uber or Lyft yet have their own rental operations, but HyreCar does. I would consider buying and qualifying used cars that Hyrecare could rent out for me. I need my prior questions resolved to my satisfaction before considering doing this. I will also need statistics for especially the upper classes rental day percentages for periods offered for their rental in my zone, I.E. %rental/day offered. Good question Bryan, your driving record is considered not clean if you have:
      – More than three moving violations in the past three years (like accidents or traffic light violations)
      – A major moving violation in the past three years (like driving on a suspended license or reckless driving)
      – A DUI or other drug-related driving violation in the last seven years
      – Driving-related convictions in the last seven years (like hit-and-run or felonies involving a vehicle)
