What is UberX? It is Uber’s standard ride: a private car for up to four passengers at an everyday price, and the option most people get when they open the app and tap “Where to?”.[1] Every other product in the lineup is a variation on it, trading price for space, comfort, shared seats or a more formal service.
This guide explains what UberX means, then compares it with the other car types you may see, so you can pick the right one before you request a ride. Availability depends on your city, and Uber itself describes the options it shows as a sample.
What does UberX mean?
The UberX meaning is a private, everyday-priced ride in a standard car, with the car and driver to yourself. Uber’s own tagline for it is “Get an affordable ride, all to yourself.” You will also see the Uber X meaning searched under that spelling; both refer to the same thing. People also compare UberX vs Uber, or Uber vs UberX, but Uber is the company and app while UberX is one ride inside it.
The page lists room for up to four passengers, one in front and three in the back. To request one, you enter a destination in the app, confirm the pickup and drop-off addresses and select UberX. After matching, you see the driver’s photo and vehicle details and can follow the car as it arrives. Payment is charged automatically to the method on file.

How do Uber car types differ?
The main difference between Uber car types is what you pay extra for: more seats, a newer or more spacious car, a professional chauffeur-style service, or a lower price in exchange for sharing. UberX vs Comfort: what is the difference?
The difference between UberX and Comfort is the car and the driver: Comfort promises newer vehicles with extra legroom and highly rated, experienced drivers.[2] UberX is the standard everyday car with no such promise.
Comfort also adds ride preferences. Before the trip you can say whether you want to chat and pick one of four temperature presets, and you get up to 10 minutes to meet the driver before a cancellation fee applies. Uber says Comfort runs in more than 40 cities and is expanding, so in other cities you may see only the standard options. In the UberX vs comfort choice, the car and driver are what change. On the driver side, Uber requires at least 100 completed trips, a minimum rating of 4.85 and an eligible vehicle model.[3] The page does not give specific model years, so eligibility depends on the make and model in your city. Uber’s pages do not publish a fixed price gap between the two, so check both in the app on the same route.
What are UberXL and UberXXL?
UberXL is the option for larger groups: a van or SUV that fits up to six people at an affordable price.[4] It is offered in any city where UberX is offered, except for a list of areas Uber names on the page.
Luggage is the practical reason to choose it. The UberXL page says the ride can accommodate a party of up to six “or extra luggage,” but it does not promise trunk space; UberXXL is the option Uber points to when space for bags is the priority. For five or six passengers, Uber’s UberX page itself recommends moving up to XL or XXL.
Do not plan an UberX for five people. The UberX page lists a maximum of four passengers, so a larger group needs UberXL or UberXXL.
What is UberX Share?
UberX Share is the cheaper-by-sharing option: you ride with up to two co-riders at a time, and each rider gets one seat.[5] Uber says it shows the exact fare before you request, rather than an estimated range.
Shared trips are designed to add about eight minutes to a ride on average, although Uber does not guarantee that. A separate option, Route Share, runs only in certain areas and times of day, in cities such as New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston and Baltimore. What is Uber Black SUV?
Uber Black SUV is the premium group option: luxury SUVs with professional drivers, seating up to six passengers in total.[6] Drivers must keep a minimum rating of 4.85, carry commercial insurance and meet state or local livery rules.
Riders can also set ride preferences such as temperature, luggage handling and conversation level through the app. Eligible vehicles vary by city and market. Uber’s page names models including the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, Lincoln Navigator and Rivian R1S. Uber Black, the sedan version, is described on Uber’s pages as a premium ride with top-rated drivers, seating up to four.
What is Wait & Save?
Wait & Save is not a car type but a way to pay less for UberX when prices are surging. It lets you accept a longer wait in exchange for a lower fare.[7] The option appears in the app only when UberX surge pricing is above a certain level, and Uber does not publish that threshold.
The discount is directly proportional to the surge at the moment you request, so higher surge means a bigger saving, shown on the receipt as a lower surge amount. If the maximum waiting time passes, the request goes to drivers whatever the surge level is.
Which Uber options no longer exist?
Uber Select, Premium, Premium SUV, LUX and LUX SUV stopped being available after July 31, 2024. Uber gave two reasons: drivers found these trip types too similar to others, and fewer riders requested them.[8] Older articles that still list them are out of date.
The options Uber’s help page now names are UberX, Comfort, UberX Share, UberXL, Black or Premier, and Black SUV or Premier SUV. Which of them appear depends on the city and, for drivers, on vehicle and account status.
Which Uber should you choose?
For most trips UberX is the default: it fits up to four and is the standard option in most cities; check the app for what your location offers. Move to Comfort for extra legroom, XL for five or six people, Share for a lower price with co-riders, and Black when you want a professional driver in a luxury car.
