İzmir faces its own gulf, a mercantile port of Greek and Levantine memory whose waterfront promenade fills every evening and whose ferries double as commuter transport. Vineyards, olive terraces and classical ruins begin almost as soon as the suburbs end.
Driving in Izmir
Izmir is reached by O-30, O-31, O-32 and D550. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.
Arriving by road
From Istanbul, drivers stay on the O-5 toll motorway the whole way, while those coming from Ankara take the E96 through Afyon and Uşak.
From the airport without a car
İzban suburban trains connect the airport with Alsancak Station north of the city centre, and passengers change at Hilal to reach the metro downtown. ESHOT bus 202 also runs from the airport to Republic Square, and both services require an İzmirimkart.
