Akureyri lies at the head of a long fjord, sheltered by mountains enough that its harbour stays clear of ice the whole year. A tunnel just east of it shortens the run out to the lava fields and the lake, and highland tracks climb away inland.
Akureyri is reached by Route 1 (Hringvegur, the Ring Road) and F821. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.
Since 2023 parking in the town centre has carried a charge, with the paid area split into two separate zones.
Route 1 reaches the town from the east through the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel, Iceland’s sole toll road, and is largely a single lane each way. The F821 climbs south out of town to join the F26 across the highlands, and is open in summer only.
Most long-distance Strætó buses call at Akureyri Airport and then stop in town at the Hof Cultural Centre. A separate airport bus runs on a timetable matched to easyJet flights, and although the airport driveway lacks a sidewalk, the public road beside it has one.
