Aberdeen by car

Aberdeen sprawls between the mouths of two rivers, its grey granite buildings glittering when the light catches the mica in the stone. Beyond the harbour the land climbs quickly into Deeside and the Cairngorms, and the tarmac thins to single carriageway out there.

Driving in Aberdeen

Aberdeen is reached by A90, A96, A93 and A947. Aberdeen has a low-emission zone. It is enforced by number-plate cameras rather than windscreen stickers: check that the car meets its emission standard before driving in. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.

Where to park

The Union St car park has its entrance next to the ferry terminal, which stands off Market Street close to the bus station. Aberdeen also runs Park & Ride sites for reaching the centre by bus.

Arriving by road

Since 2019 the A90 has bypassed the city on the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Road, so older maps may show the former route. The A92 once carried southern traffic into town and is now a tourist road, while the A96 from the north-west passes the airport at Dyce. The Glenshee section of the A93 can close in winter snow.

From the airport without a car

Stagecoach’s Jet 727 bus links Aberdeen Airport with the main bus station at Union Square, which sits beside the railway station and the ferry terminal. Dyce has a railway station of its own, but it lies on the far side of the runway from the terminal and no public transport connects the two.
