Las Palmas occupies the north-east corner of Gran Canaria, with the motorway running down the east coast. The interior of the island climbs steeply and the roads narrow as they go.
Driving in Las Palmas
Las Palmas is reached by GC-1, GC-2 and GC-3. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone.
Where to park
Several shopping malls allow parking for a limited period, and receipts from purchases there can pay for the stay. Kerbside spaces are paid at the meter even when an informal attendant waves you in, and fines for illegal parking are high.
Arriving by road
The GC-3 rings Las Palmas and ties the other motorways together, the GC-1 starts just south of downtown, and the GC-2 runs through the centre beside the beaches before turning north-west towards Agaete. There are no toll roads and entrances and exits are well signposted, but the irregular street plan and heavy weekday traffic confuse even experienced drivers.
From the airport without a car
From Gran Canaria Airport, the blue Global buses on routes 1, 5, 11, 60 and 91 run into Las Palmas, with 60 and 91 as the express lines. All of them end at one of two main city bus stations: San Telmo Park, near the historic Triana quarter, or Santa Catalina Park further north by the port and Las Canteras beach.
