Girona by car
Girona guards the corridor that has carried every army and every trade route between Catalonia and France, wedged between the Gavarres massif and the Transversal range. Its medieval quarter hangs over the Onyar in coloured houses that drop straight to the water.
Driving in Girona
Girona is reached by AP-7, N-II, C-65 and C-66. Parking in the centre is paid and marked by zone. Streets in the old centre are narrow, a smaller car is easier.
Arriving by road
From France, the A9 / E15 heads south to Girona, passing Narbonne, Perpignan and Figueres; from Barcelona the E15 is followed northwards. West of the river, both the Old Town and the New Town are compact and largely pedestrianized, and the medieval lanes of the old quarter are no place for a car.
From the airport without a car
At Girona airport, Sagalés bus 607 is timed to meet arriving flights and ends at the city bus station, one floor below street level in the high-speed wing of the railway station. Bus 602, which links Barcelona with Figueres, also calls at the airport, and a kiosk beside the stops sells tickets for both.
