How does Walmart delivery work? You choose Delivery at checkout, book a time slot, and a Walmart associate gathers and bags your items at a local store; a local, third-party driver then brings the order to your door, in some cases within two hours.[1] A standard delivery fee applies unless you qualify for Walmart+ free delivery, and faster Express options cost extra.
How does Walmart delivery work from order to doorstep?
Walmart delivery starts online or in the app: you place an order, choose a time slot, and an associate gathers the items and puts them in bags. When the order is ready, it goes out to your address. Walmart’s help center says a local, third-party delivery driver brings it right to your door, and after pickup you get a notification that the driver is on the way. If you drive for the program, see Walmart Spark driver pay and requirements.
To see whether your address qualifies, sign in, choose “How do you want your items?” and select Delivery. If delivery is unavailable from your usual store, Walmart may offer to deliver from a nearby store; otherwise the page tells you delivery is not available for the address.
This guide covers the store delivery option, which is what most people mean by Walmart same-day delivery.
You can also require a PIN or signature: if you select “I’ll sign for my order,” the driver needs your code, and a PIN may be required for some orders or high-value items.
How long does Walmart take to deliver?
Walmart delivery takes anywhere from about an hour to a few hours, depending on the option you pick. The help center says that in some cases a standard delivery can take up to two hours to reach you after the driver picks it up. The Walmart+ FAQ adds that delivery in 3 hours or less is available for an additional fee, and Express delivery can get an order to you in as little as 1 hour for an additional fee.[2]
How long does it take Walmart to deliver same day in practice? It depends on which slots your store has left. Walmart says time slots are first-come, first-served, so a same-day slot is not promised. The “need it fast” and “today” filters help you see which items are available for delivery now.
| Option | Speed Walmart states (hours) |
|---|---|
| Standard delivery from store | Up to 2 hours in some cases once the driver has the order |
| Delivery in 3 hours or less | 3 or fewer, for an extra fee |
| Express delivery | As little as 1, for an extra fee |

What time does Walmart stop delivering?
Walmart delivery stops in the evening, with the latest time slots at 8 p.m. local time. The Walmart+ FAQ says delivery times vary by store, but slots run as early as 7 a.m. and as late as 8 p.m. That is the answer to “how late does Walmart deliver” and “what is the latest Walmart delivers” for most stores, though your own store’s window decides.
Because the slots are chosen at checkout, there is no need to guess: the checkout screen only shows windows that are actually open for your address. Late slots fill quickly, since Walmart says they are first-come, first-served.
If your order is delayed, Walmart says you may receive an email, text or push notification offering options such as rescheduling, switching to pickup or canceling, and a canceled order is not charged. Those notifications are described for InHome deliveries, so check which delivery type your order uses.
Tip: Book the slot first, then add items. the Walmart+ FAQ steps put the time slot before the cart: book a time slot, add items, then check out.
How much does Walmart delivery cost?
Walmart charges a standard delivery fee that depends on your order and store, and the checkout shows the amount before you pay. Walmart+ members do not pay it on orders of $35 or more, and for Walmart+ orders under $35 the Walmart+ FAQ lists a below-order-minimum fee of $6.99. Express delivery costs extra.
| Charge | Amount (USD) |
|---|---|
| Standard delivery fee from store | Varies by order and store; shown at checkout |
| Walmart+ delivery on $35+ orders | $0 |
| Below-minimum fee for Walmart+ orders under $35 | $6.99 |
| Express delivery add-on (2021 announcement) | $10 |
The Express figure comes from Walmart’s 2021 announcement, which said Express delivery is $10 on top of the standard delivery charge, with Walmart+ members paying only the $10.[3] Walmart’s May 2026 announcement describes Express as delivery in one hour or less and adds a 30-minute-or-less tier at a $10 fee for Walmart+ members in select markets, so treat the current price as whatever the cart shows.[4]
Pricing of the goods themselves does not change: Walmart+ says delivery orders carry no markup and use the same everyday low prices as in the store.
What is Walmart Express delivery?
Walmart Express delivery is the fastest store delivery option, promising arrival in as little as 1 hour for an extra fee. Walmart introduced it in 2020 as delivery in under two hours, with no markup on item prices and more than 160,000 items covered.[5] In March 2021 Walmart removed the $35 minimum order requirement for Express, and said the service reached nearly 3,000 stores and nearly 70% of the U.S. population.
Those numbers are history rather than a current promise. Today Walmart describes Express as delivery in one hour or less, and in May 2026 it added a 30-minute-or-less tier for Walmart+ members in 33 U.S. markets. Availability depends on your store and the item, so look for the Express choice at checkout.
If you were looking for “walmart same day shipping”, that is a different service: the Walmart+ FAQ lists same-day, next-day, two-day and standard shipping as available for eligible items shipped by Walmart, with no order minimum. The $35 minimum applies to free delivery from your local store.
How far does Walmart deliver, and does it deliver to my address?
The help center gives no fixed delivery radius, so the only reliable check is your address. The help center tells you to sign in, select Delivery, and see whether your address qualifies. If it does not, you will see either “Delivery isn’t available from your store. We can deliver your order from a nearby store” or “Delivery is not available for this address.”
So how far will Walmart deliver to my house? As far as the stores that serve your address allow, and that can mean a nearby store rather than the closest one. If you would rather collect your order, see how Aldi curbside pickup works.
Delivery eligibility can also vary by item. The Walmart+ FAQ notes that free shipping may exclude some oversized and freight items and third-party items not shipped by Walmart, which are separate from store delivery.
Substitutions and tips
If an item is out of stock, Walmart may offer a substitute. The options for accepting, declining or returning a substituted item are shown in the app and in Walmart’s help pages, so check your order settings before the driver arrives.
Tips are optional, and the app shows the tip options available for your order.
