How Much Money Can You Make With Shipt? Is It Worth It in 2026

Shipt cited a $16 per hour earnings standard per offer in 2022, but your real take-home depends on gas, car wear and taxes. Here is how to work it out.

Key takeaways

  • In a February 2022 article, Shipt said no offer pays less than $16 per hour in any market by its own time estimates, and select high-cost markets go above $27 per hour.
  • Shoppers keep 100% of customer tips, and Shipt pays them out every Friday, or up to 3 times per day with Instant Pay once eligible.
  • Shipt does not reimburse mileage, so the IRS rate of 76 cents per mile from July 2026 is the yardstick for what each mile costs you.
  • Self-employment tax is 15.3% of net earnings once you clear $400 of net profit, on top of regular income tax.

How much money can you make with Shipt? In a February 2022 article, Shipt said its standard is at least $16 per hour for every offer, based on its estimate of the time and effort involved, and more in some higher-cost markets.[1] That is a gross figure for the work as Shipt measures it. What lands in your pocket is lower once you pay for fuel, car wear and self-employment tax, and the only way to know whether it is worth it is to run the numbers on your own market.

What decides how much you make with Shipt?

Five things decide your result: where you shop, when you shop, the kind of orders you accept, tips, and your costs. Shipt says it builds each offer’s pay from the time and effort it expects the order to need, and the amount differs between offers. Markets with higher living costs get a higher standard, which Shipt said in 2022 reaches above $27 per hour in select markets.

Time of day and order size change how much work you do per dollar. A large order with many items and a long drive is paid for that effort, but it also keeps you busy longer. Bonuses exist for orders that meet certain requirements. Tips depend on the customer, so treat them as an upside rather than a base.

Your own habits matter as much as the app. Waiting for the next offer, parking, and searching for items all count as unpaid minutes if the offer was priced on a shorter estimate.

Tip: Time a few of your first orders from claiming the offer to finishing the drop-off. Your real minutes, not the estimate, are the number to divide your pay by.

How does Shipt shopper pay work?

Shipt pays shoppers per order, and each offer shows an estimated pay before you accept it.[2] Under the current display, the offer card shows one estimated pay number. Tips come on top of that, and shoppers get 100% of them.

The mechanics of what Shipt pays per order are covered on a separate page, so here is the short version. Pay for completed orders reaches you by direct deposit every Friday for the previous Monday through Sunday. The details at a glance:

Item What Shipt states
Earnings standard (USD per hour, every market; Shipt, February 2022) 16 minimum
Higher-cost markets (USD per hour; Shipt, February 2022) above 27 in select markets
Tips (% kept by the shopper) 100
Regular payout Every Friday for the prior Monday to Sunday
Instant Pay (times per day) Up to 3, after eligibility

The $16 figure comes from a Shipt corporate article dated February 2022 that says its pay information is informational and not a guarantee of pay. Treat it as a floor Shipt aims for, not as promised income.

Does Shipt pay daily?

Shipt does not pay daily by default, but Instant Pay can come close. Standard pay arrives every Friday, and once you have agreed to the Stripe Connect terms in the app and had at least one successful weekly payout, you can access pay for completed orders instantly up to three times per day. If you need money quickly, that feature is the one to look for. If you can wait, the weekly deposit is the simpler route.

What does Shipt cost you to work?

Shoppers cover their own gas and data, and Shipt does not reimburse mileage.[3] That makes the car the biggest hidden line in your earnings. Shipt notes that shoppers can use a mileage tracking tool and may be able to deduct many costs as business expenses, and it recommends consulting a tax professional.

The IRS publishes a standard mileage rate that is a handy yardstick for what driving costs, even though it is a tax deduction method and not your actual bill. For 2026 it is 72.5 cents per mile from January 1 to June 30 and 76 cents per mile from July 1 to December 31.[4]

Period Business rate (cents per mile)
2025, full year 70
2026, Jan 1 to Jun 30 72.5
2026, Jul 1 to Dec 31 76

Mixed-use cars are limited to the business share of the cost, so personal trips do not count.

How much do Shipt shoppers really make after expenses?

Work out net earnings per hour by subtracting your driving cost from what you earned and dividing by every hour you were on the clock, including waiting. As an illustration with made-up numbers, suppose two hours of shopping, driving and waiting produce $50 in offer pay plus tips, and you drive 20 miles. At 76 cents per mile, driving is worth $15.20 in the IRS yardstick, which leaves $34.80, or $17.40 per hour before income tax.

That example lands near the $16 figure Shipt cited in 2022, which shows how much distance can eat into a shopper’s pay. A short, dense route keeps more of the money than a long drive between stores and homes.

Tip: Keep a simple log of miles, hours and tips for each week. After a month you will know your real net hourly rate rather than a guess.

What taxes do Shipt shoppers pay?

Shoppers are independent contractors, so Shipt does not withhold any taxes from weekly payouts and the shopper files their own.[5] Shipt sends a 1099 form at year end to shoppers who earn above a certain amount. Self-employment tax is 15.3% of net earnings, split into 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare, and it applies when net earnings reach $400 or more.[6]

Set a share of each payout aside rather than spending it. Self-employed people claim car expenses on Schedule C, and the IRS lets you deduct only the business portion of a car used for both business and personal driving.[7] A tax professional can tell you which method suits your situation.

Is it worth driving for Shipt? Pros and cons

Whether Shipt is worth it depends on your net figure and what you value. The main advantages are flexibility, no signup cost and no minimum workload. Signing up is free, shoppers set their own schedules, and there is no minimum number of orders per week or month. You can also take a break of any length and return.

The main drawbacks are that costs are yours and pay is not guaranteed. Gas, data and car wear come out of your earnings, there is no mileage reimbursement, and the amount varies from offer to offer.

Shipt tends to suit people with a fuel-efficient car, flexible hours and a dense area with plenty of offers, as well as anyone who wants to test gig work without commitment. It suits people who need a steady, predictable income less well. To compare apps on fees, see whether Shipt is cheaper than Instacart.

How do you become a Shipt shopper?

To become a Shipt shopper you sign up through Shipt, which costs nothing, and get activated before you can claim orders. During signup you choose a large area called a metro. Shipt’s help center lists the shopper onboarding team as the contact for questions. The help center page does not list further eligibility rules, so check the current requirements in the shopper signup flow before you plan around them.

Should you do it? A quick decision check

Do it if your net hourly rate, calculated as above, beats your other options and you like choosing your hours. Skip it, or try it for a few weeks first, if you would struggle with fuel costs or if variable income would strain your budget. Because there is no minimum workload and no signup fee, a short trial costs little and gives you real numbers to decide with.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Shipt shopper make per hour?

There is no single figure. In a February 2022 article, Shipt stated that every offer is built so it pays at least $16 per hour by its own time estimate, and more in some pricey markets. Check the estimate on each offer in the app for current pay. What you keep depends on how long orders really take you, tips, fuel, car wear and taxes, so calculate your own net hourly rate.

Does Shipt pay daily?

Not by default. Shipt deposits earnings every Friday for the previous Monday through Sunday. After you agree to the Stripe Connect terms in the app and receive one successful weekly payout, Instant Pay lets you cash out completed orders up to three times per day.

Do Shipt shoppers keep all the tips?

Yes. Shipt says shoppers receive 100% of the tip a customer leaves, and tips are added on top of the pay for the order. Shipt credits and gift cards cannot be used as tips, so only real tips count toward your total.

Does Shipt reimburse gas or mileage?

No. Shoppers are independent contractors and cover gas and data themselves. Shipt does not reimburse mileage, though shoppers can track miles and may be able to deduct business costs at tax time. Ask a tax professional how that applies to you.

Is there a minimum number of orders per week?

No. Shipt says shoppers set their own schedules, can take a break of any length and come back, and there is no minimum number of orders per week, month or year. That flexibility is the main reason people try it as a side income.

Is Shipt worth it?

It can be if your net hourly figure after gas, wear and taxes beats your alternatives and you value choosing your own hours. It is a weaker fit if your car is expensive to run, orders in your area are scarce, or you need a guaranteed paycheck.
