Picking up and returning
Shuttles at the airport
Skylink walkways join the passenger terminals, with travelators along the way, so no tram transfer is needed between them. Buses tie the on-site car parks to the terminals, and an off-site car park used for drop-offs has its own shuttle bus to the terminals.
Driving to the airport
A dedicated approach road branches off the motorway at junction 5, while smaller local roads come in from Wythenshawe on the north side and Heald Green on the east. Traffic from the Stockport side can use the A555, which was extended to reach the airport from the A6.
Public transport into town
The Station is the airport’s interchange for rail, bus and coach, linked to the terminals by the Skylink walkway. Trains also run to Crewe, Holyhead and Llandudno, Metrolink trams continue to Manchester Victoria via Market Street, and Skyline 199 buses go to Buxton via Stockport.

Frequently asked questions
United Kingdom: which side of the road do they drive on?
On the left. If you are used to the right, allow yourself a little time at the start — junctions and roundabouts catch people out, not the straight roads.
Which currency will I be charged in?
Prices are usually set in GBP. The rental company sets both the price and the deposit, and shows them before you book.
Can I drive the car into another country?
Sometimes, but only if the rental company allows it, and it often costs extra. Check the terms before you book.
How far is Manchester from the airport?
9 mi, about 20 minutes by car via the M56.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
An EU or EEA licence is enough.
What are the speed limits in United Kingdom?
30 mph in towns, 60 mph on open roads, 70 mph on motorways.
Are the motorways tolled?
Some motorways charge at the barrier, others are free.
